Test a character silhouette on a small contact sheet

A character draft can gain decoration faster than it gains a clear overall shape. Try a small sheet of outlines for a character you are developing yourself. The exercise asks which shape supports the scene, not which silhouette follows a universal recipe for good character design.

Keep the scene and pose stable

Write one action above the sheet, such as a fictional courier waiting beside a doorway. Make a few outline variants at the same rough scale and use the same pose. Change one feature you want to explore: the bag shape, coat length or position of a carried object. Krita’s basic-concepts manual distinguishes the image from views used to inspect it; changing a view is not the same as redesigning the character. Keep the comparison conditions visible beside the studies.

Look for specific collisions

View the sheet at the size where it will be discussed. Note where the carried object merges with the torso or where a gap disappears. Then inspect that area more closely before making a change. Avoid explaining every unclear mark aloud to the reviewer; write down what the sheet itself communicates. This is a review exercise, not a timed perception test, so report observations in plain language rather than inventing a readability percentage.

Carry the decision into the next drawing

Choose a variant for the next draft and state the reason in relation to the action. Retain the other studies with their labels so a collaborator can see what was explored. Add internal costume detail only after checking that it does not undo the chosen shape. For work in an established universe, use the approved identity references and distinguish a design proposal from canon. An outline variation does not create a new Sanjiesan identity or alter the 54-card identity system.
