Give idle and wave their own frame ranges

A sprite can contain several actions without becoming several different characters. Before preparing a pack, identify which frames belong to idle and which belong to a wave. Aseprite documents tags for naming animation ranges. Use that organisation to make the intended action boundaries clear, while keeping the character’s identity and the individual drawings separate.

Describe the beginning and ending of each action

Use an invented sprite you control and write whether idle repeats and whether the wave returns to idle. Identify the actual first and last frame of each action. Keep a shared neutral drawing deliberate rather than letting it belong to a range by accident. If the wave ends with the hand raised, say whether that is a held end state or an unfinished transition. Names alone do not establish how one action connects to another.

Name the ranges and playback direction

Aseprite’s tag documentation describes named ranges and forward, reverse or ping-pong directions. Inspect the direction chosen for each action instead of assuming every tag plays identically. Preview the intended range on its own and check that no setup frame from the next action leaks into it. A meaningful tag name can help navigation, but the pack still needs instructions about what the action represents and whether it is designed to loop.

Check the handoff as two usable actions

Review the exported or receiving workflow with each action explicitly selected. Keep range names and any required timing information with the source rather than relying only on a sprite-sheet thumbnail. If the destination does not understand the editor’s tags, define an equivalent mapping and inspect it. Do not call two ranges two separate character identities. For official IP work, reuse the approved identity reference instead of inventing a new identity from an animation-state label.
