Separate a sticker design’s border from its drawn outline

A white border around a drawing is not the same decision as the black line that describes the subject. Sticker Mule’s Illustrator border guidance includes making a unified outer shape and cleaning up inner areas or rough edges. Use that as context for a visual concept review. The production cut path and exact requirements still need the chosen manufacturer’s confirmation.

Read the subject without the added border

Choose a small original illustration with one protruding detail and one internal gap. Inspect whether the drawn contour already explains the subject. Then decide what the added border should do, such as separating the image from a busy background. Do not make the border responsible for repairing a confusing drawing. Preserve the editable original so a later border revision does not require reconstructing the subject’s line work.

Compare the outside silhouette

On a working copy, inspect an added outer shape at the intended presentation size. Check narrow valleys, isolated pieces and sharp extensions. A broad border can join details that were separate in the drawing or fill an opening that helps recognition. Simplify deliberately if needed, keeping the subject understandable. Do not infer a manufacturer’s minimum cut feature from a visual preview or from a different supplier’s template.

Show the concept and its remaining question

Place the concept on a plain background and one representative busy background. Show the whole outer silhouette rather than cropping tightly around the illustration. Keep any proposed cut-path layer separate and clearly identified. State which shape details need manufacturer review before production. A useful concept preview lets a reader understand the artwork and the intended border without suggesting that material durability, cutting quality or physical samples have already been verified.
