Keep editable wording beside an outlined title

Turning text into shapes can help with custom lettering, but the outlined result is no longer ordinary editable type. Adobe’s vectorizing reference explicitly recommends duplicating the text before conversion. Make that copy part of the creative file’s structure so a small wording revision does not become a reconstruction of every letter.

Separate approved words from shape work

Use an original title and check spelling, punctuation and intended language before making decorative changes. Keep a live-text copy labelled as the wording source. Place the custom-shape version in a separate clearly named group. The two versions serve different purposes: one preserves what is written, while the other supports the illustrated treatment. Do not rely on a screenshot as the only record of the text if a later editor must change it.

Make one controlled lettering change

Convert only the working duplicate when the chosen application and font terms permit the intended use. Try one deliberate alteration, such as extending an original letter’s terminal to follow the illustration. Compare legibility with the untouched live text. Avoid adding enough shape changes that the title can no longer be read without knowing it in advance. A distinctive contour is useful only if it still serves the words and the composition.

Practise a small wording revision

Change one word in the live copy and consider how the artwork version would be rebuilt. If the custom treatment depends on every letter, note that a wording change requires renewed layout review. Keep the former outlined version as a comparison rather than silently replacing the source words. The working file should make the current wording and current artwork easy to identify, with no implication that converting shapes grants additional font rights.
