Revise an edge without erasing the earlier painting

An instruction such as soften the coat can lead to a large amount of repainting before anyone agrees which edge is distracting. Pick one boundary and make a reversible study. The useful result is a visible comparison and a decision about that boundary, rather than an impressive stack of revisions.

Name the boundary and its job

For a fictional portrait, mark where a dark sleeve meets the background beside the face. Write whether you want the sleeve to attract less attention or to remain clearly separated. These are different aims and may need different treatments. Keep a copy of the working image before the exercise. Krita documents masks as a way to change the effect of layers without simply repainting all their pixels; check the appropriate mask type in the installed application before using it.

Compare the edge inside the whole image

Work on the selected area and leave the neighbouring face, pose and lighting broadly unchanged. Toggle the experimental result while looking at the whole composition, then inspect the boundary closely for an accidental halo or missing contour. A softer edge viewed alone can look attractive while weakening the intended gesture. Record what changed in the relationship between the sleeve and face. Avoid judging the revision only from a tightly cropped screenshot that hides its original purpose.

Keep a readable revision state

Name the study for its purpose, such as sleeve edge beside face, and note whether it was retained, rejected or left for review. If it is accepted, check nearby details again after later painting passes. Do not assume the presence of a mask makes every change easy to recover; the saved working file and its layer state still matter. Export a comparison only when it helps the next discussion, and keep the editable source alongside the decision note.
