Judge a small vector icon in pixels as well as paths

A beautifully smooth vector curve can become unclear when turned into a very small image. Adobe’s pixel-preview documentation explains previewing the rasterised appearance of vector artwork. Use that view as an aid, then inspect the actual required export. The goal is a recognisable original icon at its intended use size, not only an elegant path at a large zoom.

Choose the actual smallest use

State where the icon will appear and prepare the intended pixel dimensions. Use a plain original symbol with one defining internal gap. Inspect it without a label first, then in its actual surrounding layout. A large preview can make that gap seem generous even when it nearly disappears small. Keep a larger reference view for editing, but let the real use size determine which details are necessary.

Compare position and form separately

Use the documented pixel-preview or alignment aids where appropriate to inspect straight edges. Compare a small placement adjustment before redrawing the whole icon. Then consider whether the defining gap or detail needs a simpler form. Do not force every curve onto the same grid merely to obtain identical numeric coordinates. The visual result of diagonal and curved edges needs its own judgement rather than a blanket claim that snapping makes every edge equally sharp.

Inspect the actual exported asset

Export through the intended route and view the result at its normal size in the receiving layout. Check recognition, internal spacing and consistency beside related icons. If the exported result differs from the editing preview, inspect the export and destination rather than declaring the source finished. Keep a small-size reference image with the asset. It gives later revisions a concrete appearance target without pretending that every device or rendering path has been tested.
