SANJIESAN CREATOR / Sprite edge review

Give a transparent sprite edge a real background check

A checkerboard is useful for seeing empty canvas, but it is not the setting where every sprite will be used. Aseprite’s colour-mode reference distinguishes RGBA transparency and the transparent index in indexed images. Before delivering a small original sprite, inspect its boundary against the intended backgrounds rather than approving it only over the editor’s checkerboard.

Choose backgrounds from the actual use

Use a simple invented object sprite and place it over a light area, a dark area and a representative scene colour. Keep the sprite pixels unchanged at first. Inspect whether the outline separates the object and whether any edge pixels appear to carry an unwanted colour. Avoid selecting extreme test backgrounds as the only evidence if the asset will normally sit over a specific illustrated environment. Include that environment in the comparison.

Check the file mechanism before repainting

Confirm the intended colour mode and transparency setup in the source and export. In indexed work, inspect which entry is designated transparent instead of assuming a visually empty swatch behaves as expected. Compare the output against the source in a permitted receiving workflow. If the boundary changes only after export, investigate that route before repainting every edge pixel. Keep the unmodified original for a clear comparison.

Revise for the intended reading size

Once transparency behaves correctly, inspect the sprite at its intended pixel size rather than only enlarged. A one-pixel correction can change a small handle or facial cue substantially. Recheck all required backgrounds after each local revision. Keep an overview showing the approved use conditions. Do not claim universal visibility on every possible scene; identify the backgrounds and sizes the asset was actually prepared to support.
