Follow one fingertip through an animated reaching arc

The first and last poses of a reach can look reasonable while the hand takes an awkward route between them. Adobe’s animation-principles overview describes arcs as a way to consider motion paths. Use one point on an original hand study to inspect that route. The point is a diagnostic aid, not a rule that every animated action must follow a perfect circle.

Choose the point and the intended reach

Use a simple original figure reaching toward a small object. Choose one fingertip as the tracked point and mark its position in the main poses. State whether the reach should feel direct, hesitant or carefully placed. Keep the camera fixed for this first inspection. A camera move introduces another source of screen movement and can make it difficult to tell whether a kink comes from the hand or from the view.

Inspect the middle positions

Compare the tracked positions in order and inspect any abrupt change of direction. Look at the corresponding arm and shoulder, not just the dots. A smooth fingertip route is not useful if it breaks the figure’s structure. Revise the necessary pose deliberately before filling every gap with more drawings. Extra in-betweens can make an unintended detour smoother without making the reaching action more convincing.

Check arrival without the guide marks

Hide the trajectory guide and play the action at the intended speed. Check whether the hand arrives at the right place and whether contact with the object remains readable. If a deliberate hesitation is part of the action, preserve it rather than smoothing it away automatically. Keep a small annotated comparison of the revised region. It should explain the changed route and pose, without claiming that one arc formula applies to every character or movement.
