Use a gradient to support one illustration focus

A gradient can separate a small subject from its background, or make the brightest empty corner dominate the image. Its value depends on the placement. Krita’s gradient tool documents linear and radial shapes, with painting confined by an active selection. Use those simple options for a focused comparison rather than treating every gradient as an atmosphere upgrade.

Name the detail that should be noticed

Choose one invented illustration, such as a person holding an unlit lantern in a doorway. State whether the face, hand or doorway is the first reading target. Keep a flat-background copy as the baseline. If you cannot name the focal detail, adding several colour transitions will make the comparison harder. Establish a simple value difference around the target before considering decorative colour changes elsewhere.

Change direction while keeping the subject fixed

Make two copies with the same subject and colours. In one, let a linear transition run behind the focal detail; in the other, move a radial centre nearby. Compare the whole composition at a small view. Ask whether the brightest or most contrasted region now points toward the intended action. Do not adjust pose, crop and gradient simultaneously, because you will no longer know which change improved the reading.

Inspect the boundary and the small output

If the gradient belongs only to a window or wall plane, constrain that area rather than allowing it to wash across the figure. Inspect the final small output as well as the working canvas. A transition that looks smooth and subtle while enlarged can disappear or become distracting after export. Keep the version that supports the named focus with the least interference, even if its effect is less dramatic in isolation.
