Read the gap between the arm and torso

A character can have correct costume details while the pose still reads as one closed mass. Look at the space between an arm and the torso rather than immediately adding more contour lines. This small exercise asks whether that gap helps explain the action. It does not require changing an established character identity, proportions or costume rules.

Choose the action the pose must communicate

Use an invented figure reaching for a nearby shelf. Draw the pose simply and identify the arm-to-torso gap as a separate shape. Keep the camera and shelf position fixed. If the arm merges with the body, ask whether the intended reach can still be understood. Do not assume every gap must be large; a close, guarded pose can legitimately compress the space. The action and character performance decide which separation matters.

Compare two small pose adjustments

Make two rough alternatives by changing the elbow position or viewing angle deliberately, keeping the action destination the same. Krita’s Transform Tool can transform a selection or layer; if used for a rough comparison, preserve the original and inspect the anatomy afterwards. A transformed arm may expose a useful gap while distorting the hand or shoulder. Treat the transform as a sketching aid, not proof that the resulting figure is structurally sound.

Return to the whole figure

Inspect the chosen pose at the intended image size and read the hand, shoulder and action together. Hide any diagnostic outline around the gap. Ask what the figure is doing without pointing to the empty shape for the viewer. If a cleaner gap makes the performance less appropriate, reconsider it. Keep the selected rough and reason with the study, so later cleanup preserves the useful pose decision without turning negative space into a rigid universal rule.
