Move the key action away from a bound book’s centre

A gesture that reads clearly across a flat screen may become difficult to see at the centre of a bound book. Blurb’s perfect-bound spread guidance warns about content lost or misaligned at the gutter and distinguishes that format from its Layflat books. Use the actual binding specification for the project. Do not invent one centre allowance that supposedly guarantees every book.

Identify the action that carries the spread

Use an original scene where one figure passes a small object to another. Mark the hands, exchanged object and facial reaction. Inspect how the scene reads if the central strip is difficult to see. Do not rely on the illustration being beautiful as one uninterrupted panorama. Decide which pieces of the action must remain together on a readable page and which background shapes can tolerate a less certain central view.

Compare a shifted composition

Prepare a working variation that moves the critical exchange to one side while retaining a useful connection across the spread. Inspect the balance rather than simply leaving a large empty centre. A broad sky or unimportant ground area may cross more comfortably than a face or a narrow hand gesture. Check any continuous line across the gutter against the supplier’s guidance; a flat digital alignment alone is not evidence of a perfectly aligned bound result.

Review pages and spread together

View both the complete spread and each page within the project’s actual format. Check the action, captions and visual entry point. If a digital edition is also planned, review it separately instead of silently changing the print layout to suit a continuous screen. Keep a note of the binding assumption beside the design. A later switch of format should trigger a fresh layout check rather than inherit a decision made for another book construction.
