Try three value groups before the colour detail

A scene can contain attractive colours while its main action disappears among similar values. For one study, limit the drawing to three broad value groups. The restriction is a temporary way to ask a question, not a requirement that the final illustration remain simple or monochrome.

Choose the event the study should reveal

Write one event, such as a fictional visitor reaching a counter, and identify the object or gesture that matters. Make a small study using light, middle and dark groups chosen for this exercise. Avoid adding a fourth accent every time the picture becomes difficult; first see whether the existing shapes can be arranged more clearly. Keep the colour sketch nearby, but give the value study its own label so it is not mistaken for an approved production palette.

Use references for structure rather than imitation

Krita’s reference-image documentation includes a saturation control that can help examine light and shadow. If you use it, keep the source and viewing condition identified. Study where broad groups meet, then return to your own scene. Do not transfer a distinctive composition simply because its colours have been removed. The useful output is an observation such as the hand merges with the counter, followed by a proposed change in your own drawing.

Bring back colour and recheck the action

Compare the revised value study with the colour version at the intended display size. Check whether the event is still visible after texture and lighting details return. Record where the simple study stopped being useful; some scenes deliberately depend on ambiguity or a quieter focal relationship. Do not call the three-group result objectively better without relating it to the brief. Keep the study as one review condition among several, not a verdict on the entire illustration.
