Inspect a soft selection before recolouring an edge

Changing a coat colour can leave an unexpected fringe even when the chosen colour is correct. The selection may include a gradual boundary that is hard to read from marching ants alone. Krita documents a mask display for seeing selection transparency levels. Use that view to examine what will actually receive the change before repainting the coat edge.

Keep the intended edge visible

Make the colour change on a reversible working copy. Choose a part where the coat meets both a pale background and a darker object. These two contexts help expose different edge problems. Keep the original beside the revision so you can tell whether a soft transition belonged to the brushwork or appeared with the new selection. A clean hard outline is not automatically the correct result for a deliberately painted soft edge.

Inspect the selected amount, not just the outline

Switch to the documented selection-mask display and inspect the uncertain edge. A visible outline shows a useful boundary but does not describe every partial selection value. Compare a narrow correction with a broader feathered selection on separate copies. Check whether the recolour changes a neighbouring object or leaves old colour in the transition. Avoid using the same feather amount for a tiny sleeve and a large background shape merely for consistency.

Compare the revised object in context

Deselect and return to the ordinary artwork view. Inspect the silhouette, the internal paint texture and the neighbouring colours. If the transition now works but the coat still looks wrong, reconsider the colour relationship rather than repeatedly changing the selection. Keep a note of the specific edge decision, such as preserving the soft shoulder while protecting the hard cuff. That is a useful revision reason; a list of unexplained selection settings is not.
