SANJIESAN CREATOR / BUYING GUIDE

Choose a sketchbook for the marks you will make

A notebook that suits pencil studies may not answer a different painting task. Before buying a sketchbook, name the media, the size of a normal study and how you use the page. Moleskine’s official art collection separates sketchbooks and watercolour products. That is a useful catalogue distinction, not a guarantee that every pen or wet technique will behave as you expect.

List the actual marks and page layout

Write whether you mainly make pencil lines, ink notes, coloured-pencil studies or another defined mark. Include erasing, layering and using both sides if they matter. Sketch a normal page with the subject and any notes. Do not choose the largest size only because it accommodates every imagined future project. A small carried study and a spread laid flat on a desk create different needs for dimensions and binding.

Read the exact paper and binding description

The linked Moleskine sketchbook page gives paper and opening specifications for that offer. Check the selected size and product rather than applying those details to every notebook in the catalogue. Ask about your intended media when the listing does not answer it. Paper weight alone does not establish bleed-through, texture preference or behaviour with every tool. Where a permitted sample sheet or in-person example exists, compare the actual marks instead of relying only on a smooth product photograph.

Choose a book you can keep using

Compare the chosen format with the way the book is held, carried and photographed if the work will later be digitised. Check whether the gutter interrupts the kind of study you make. Read current market, delivery and return information before purchase, without treating a catalogue entry as a stock guarantee. Keep the choice tied to a repeatable page task. A premium notebook does not replace a practice plan, and a modest suitable book may serve the immediate drawing need.
