Check an illustrated book sequence in its real page pairs

A folder of finished illustrations does not yet show how they will meet across pages. Blurb’s PDF-to-book checklist describes an opening single page followed by paired spreads and a final single page for that workflow. Confirm the actual book specification, then review the sequence in its real pairs. Do not assume an editor’s continuous thumbnail strip represents the printed reading arrangement.

Build a small sequence with page roles

Use a few original images and label their roles, such as opening view, close detail, pause and ending. Include intended blank or text pages instead of treating them as spaces to add later. Place the sequence in the chosen page arrangement. A blank page changes what faces the next image, so it is part of the design. Keep the cover separate until the interior’s format and page count are settled according to the chosen workflow.

Inspect facing images and the turn

View the real facing pairs. Ask whether two images compete, repeat the same information or create a deliberate comparison. Then inspect the transition that appears only after turning the page. A reveal placed opposite its setup is a different experience from a reveal hidden until the next opening. Rearrange the sequence deliberately rather than applying a simple alternating rule to every image regardless of what it shows.

Review the actual exported interior

Open the exported interior in the required page arrangement and verify the beginning, a middle transition and the ending. Check intended blank pages, text flow and any changed image placement. If the export changes the page count or pairing, resolve that before calling the layout complete. Keep a simple page map with the working files. It documents the intended sequence while leaving physical binding and print quality to the appropriate proof stage.
