Name colour swatches for the job they do in a scene

A row of attractive colours becomes difficult to use when nobody remembers which one belonged to the wall, coat or evening light. For a single scene, name a small set by purpose and keep a painted example beside it. The palette should help maintain a choice, rather than dictate every colour in a finished image.

Separate the object from the study

Imagine an invented workshop with a red cabinet and a pale floor. Start with names such as cabinet base and floor base, then keep a proposed evening-light variant in a separate group. A dark sample from a shadow is not automatically the cabinet’s new base colour. Krita’s palette docker supports named swatches and groups; use that organisation to make the intended role visible instead of relying on the order of colour chips alone.

Paint a small use example

Put the swatches beside a simple study containing both objects. Note the working colour profile and whether a sample came from the painting or was chosen directly for the palette. Compare the cabinet against the floor before deciding a chip needs changing. Adjacent colours and the size of painted areas are part of the composition. This is an artistic comparison, so describe the observed relationship rather than claiming the palette guarantees accurate colour on every device or printed material.

Record changes where they affect the scene

If the cabinet colour changes, update the named choice and mark which scene studies still use the previous one. Keep a small before-and-after crop when the distinction is hard to explain. Do not silently replace a shared palette while another contributor is painting from it. For an established character, compare the proposed change with the approved reference; a scene-lighting experiment should not become a new official costume colour by accident.
